World-wide SPAM levels drop 1/3 – Is Rustock Really Dead?

Symantec estimates that 1/3 of all SPAM was stopped when Microsoft (with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals and a court order) took steps to shut down the Rustock botnet. Other botnets (Bagle, Festi, Cutwail, Lethic, Grum, Xarvester and others) are stepping into the void left by Rustock. Whether Rustock will remain 'dead', is unclear as the Rustock programmers and Rustock ringleaders are still unidentified and still at large. Continue reading →

When is VPN a Good Idea?

networks. What is the best practice to connect those two
PCs together as if they were connected locally in a LAN.
Is VPN the answer and how do I setup a VPN network connection?
Do I need a VPN server or something?

BlueCoat manufactures security devices providing Web Content Filtering for corporate enterprises. They also make a parental control application called K9 Web Protection which is free for home users. It is an excellent balance of filtering capability and ease of use and has a lot of options to help parents set limits on web browsing and block unsafe or inappropriate sites. What you get is pretty impressive, given that it is free.
