- Application Layer
- The Application Layer is the layer of the TCP/IP model in which computer programs capable of network communication reside.
Applications that are capable of using the network include:
- Your Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera etc.)
- Web Servers
- File Servers
- Terminal Servers
- Online games
- File Transfer applications (WS-FTP, WinSCP etc.)
- Microsoft Windows Update
- Anti-Virus applications
Any of these is capable of using the network and would be included at the application layer of the model. Strictly speaking, any computer program would technically reside at this layer, but because we're discussing the TCP/IP model, and that's a networking model, we're only concerned with those programs that use the network.
