Common in cellular and satellite communications, Viterbi convolutional decoders are used most commonly in GSM and CDMA cellular transmissiona and in satellite communications to decode Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) information encoded with convolutional forward error correcting methods. Viterbi gets it's name from Andrew Viterbi who, in 1966 published a decoding algorithm was looking for a way to use the data stream to 'figure out' the most likely proper symbol when digital communications encounters noise that impairs communication.
